Porsche Boxster

First introduced in late 1996 the Porsche Boxster is a mid-engined roadster designed by Raymond Barth. Powered by a 2.5 litre flat six-cylinder engine and produced at the former 928 facility in Stuttgart, Germany. Interestingly not all Porsche Boxsters have been manufactured in Stuttgart. They are also manufactured by Valmet Automotive Oy at a facility in Uusikaupunki, Finland. The Porsche Boxster was a huge success for Porsche and became their biggest volume seller from 1997 until 2003. So where did the name “Boxster” originate? The story is that the word “boxer” refers to the
the vehicle's horizontally-opposed or "boxer" engine and the word "roadster" refers to the convertible top and somehow these two separate words have evolved into “Boxster”.

There is no doubt that as sales were declining Porsche were looking for something different to reinvigorate the company and “Style Porsche” design department head Harm Lagaay came up with the “Boxster”. They say he was inspired by the Porsche Spyder and Speedster as well as the Porsche 550 Spyder.

To get the company back on track Porsche consulted with Toyota on production techniques and were subsequently able to greatly decrease the cost of manufacture, the result was more sales, lower costs and bigger profits.

The placement of the flat six engine immediately ahead of the rear axle gives the Boxster excellent balance with a low centre of gravity and neutral handling characteristics. The Boxster is available with a 2.5 ltr or a 3.2 ltr engine.

The New Boxster

The second generation of the Boxster (internally known as the 987) was introduced at the Paris Motor Show and it is sometimes difficult to see the difference. One major difference would be the headlights. Other changes include larger intake vents on the sides and more pronounced horizontal slats. Also the wheel arches have been enlarged to allow wheels up to 19 inches in diameter.
