The Porsche 959 - The Porsche Supercar

The Porsche 959 was introduced at the 1983 Frankfurt Motor Show. It was to be Porsche’s entry in the new Group B racing series for factory-experimental cars. Manufactured from 1986 to 1989 the Porsche 959 was developed as a rally car and in order to meet FIA regulations a minimum number of 292 road cars were produced. At the time the Porsche 959 was regarded as the most advanced road vehicle ever made with a top speed of 190 mph. It was the first to use an all-wheel-drive system and was the basis on which the Carrera 4 model was built. Special features included electronically adjustable ride height and damper control and water cooled cylinder heads.

The power unit produced 450 hp although it is said that if finely tuned this could be increased up to maybe 600 hp. Porsche used an aluminium and Kevlar composite for the body and Nomex for the floor. This power combined with an extremely lightweight body (2917 pounds) delivered exceptional performance zero to 60 in 3.6 seconds.

The Porsche 959 won the Paris to Dakar rally in 1984 and 1986
