Often referred to as “The Porsche of the 1980,s” The Porsche 944 was first introduced to the World at the Frankfurt Motor Show in 1981. Created to replace the 924 the Porsche 944 was a huge success for Porsche. The 2.5 L straight 4 engine design was based on Porsche 928's V8 engine and the body design was based on the 924 model.

Porsche 944 Turbo

The Porsche 944 Turbo was introduced in 1985. This model was turbocharged and intercooled and produced 220 hp at 6000 rpm. The Porsche 944 turbo was the world's first car using a ceramic portliner to maintain lower engine temperatures.

Porsche 944S

The Porsche 944S was introduced in 1987 with a more powerful engine 190 bhp and interestingly dual air-bags and an anti-lock brake system.

Porsche 944 Turbo S

The Porsche 944 Turbo S was introduced in 1988 with an even more powerful engine 247 hp, this was achieved by using a larger turbo housing on the exhaust side with a remapped engine computer and larger sodium-cooled exhaust valves. The Porsche 944 Turbo S achieved a 0-60 mph in 5.5 seconds making the Porsche 944 Turbo S the fastest production four cylinder car of its time.

The “S” designation was dropped in 1989 and the 944 S 2 was introduced with a 208 hp engine, which at the time was the largest four-cylinder gasoline engine in the world.
