A design that was quite simply ahead of it’s time the Porsche 928 manufactured from 1978 to 1995 was one of their most expensive. At one time it was the fastest production road-car in the world, recorded at 172 mph. The Porsche 928 was marketed under the slogan "It's about as fast as you can go without having to eat airline food".

The Porsche 928 was launched to the public at the 1977 Geneva Motor Show. The car was more expensive than previous Porsches and not immediately accepted by the traditional 911 enthusiasts.

The unique body shape was styled by Wolfgang MГ¶bius working with Anatole Lapine. The Porsche 928 had exceptional large luggage area accessed via the hatchback. Another unusual feature was the polyurethane elastic bumpers integrated into the nose and tail and colour coded to the colour of the car. With 2 very small seats in the rear the car just about qualified as a 2+2. One interesting new feature was the instrument panel which moved with the steering wheel as it was adjusted. The Porsche 928 was the first vehicle to incorporate this feature.

The Porsche 928 won the 1978 European Car of the Year competition, which was consider by many as proof that the Porsche 928 was indeed way ahead of it’s time.

Launched in 1980 with a revised 4.7 L engine the European versions boasted a 300 PS (221 kW/297 hp), and were upgraded to 310 PS (228 kW/306 hp) for the 1984 model year.

"Ferry Porsche Edition"

140 special "50th Jubilee" 928 S models were produced to celebrate the company's 50 year existence as a car manufacturer. Often referred to as the "Ferry Porsche Edition", because his signature was embroidered into the front seats, the Porsche 928 was a unique Porsche although similar 911 and 924 Ferry Edition specials were also made.

Even to this day the Porsche 928 does not look like a design first thought of back in 1977.
