The Porsche 924

The Porsche 924 produced by Porsche from 1976 to 1988.

A two-door, 2+2 coupé was a replacement for the 914. The Porsche 924 was actually commissioned by Volkswagen who employed Porsche to design a Volkswagen sports car. For various reasons Volkswagen dropped the idea and Porsche struck a deal that allowed them use the design to manufacture the Porsche 924. The visual design was the creation of a Dutchman; Harm Lagaay, a member of the Porsche design team. The Porsche 924 was an undoubted success for Porsche and a stepping stone for the development of the 911. The Porsche 924 first appeared in November 1975 at the harbour at La Grande Motte, Camargue, south of France at a special press launch arranged by Porsche.

The Porsche 924S

The Porsche 924S incorporated the 944 engine in 1986 and was named the Porsche 924S

The Porsche 924 Turbo

Introduced in 1978 the lighter weighted car and turbocharged engine really improved performance and many say the Porsche 924 Turbo matched the 911 SC for performance. Porsche decided to enter the car in the 1981 Le Mans 24 Hours. Porsche now had their race car the Porsche 924 Carrera GT. This was later launched as a road car and named as The Porsche 924 Carrera GT & The Porsche 924 Carrera GTS. Eventually Porsche developed the 924 Carrera GTR race car with 375 hp. Today the Porsche 924 Carrera GT is considered by many to be one of the best classic sports cars in the world.
