Porsche 911 Carrera - Production 1964–1989

The Porsche 911 first appeared in 1963 at the Frankfurt Motor Show. It was to replace the original Porsche 356, which in turn was a development on of the Volkswagen Beetle The name Porsche 911 is interesting in that initially it was to be called the Porsche 901 but Peugeot objected as they had already had a car series with 3 numbers and a zero in the middle. The new Porsche 911 went on sale in 1964 as a direct competitor to the Jaguar E Type.

The 911 proved to be a winner and in 1966 Porsche introduced the more powerful 911S, Then in 1967 the Targa; with a removable roof panel. Porsche had thought that the USA would ban a fully open convertible and as the USA was such an important market the solution was the Targa Top.

Interestingly the name "Targa" derived form the road race in Italy (Sicily) Targa Florio; a road race established by the car enthusiasts Vincenzo Florio, the son of a prominent Sicilian family.

In 1924 Alfred Neubauer finished thirteenth with his co-driver Ferdinand Porsche. Porsche went on to have considerable success in the race with victories in 1956, 1959, 1960, 1963, 1964, 1966, 1967, 1968, 1969, 1970 and 1973.

The 911 did not have the best handling and was liable to over steer. This was due to the Porsche 911's unusual engine placement. The engine was rear-mounted and this meant that most of the vehicle's weight was concentrated over the rear axle

1973 Porsche 911 Carrera RS

The notation RS comes from the German word Rennsport which could be translated as motorsport. The Carrera name was taken from the original Porsche 356 Carrera although at the time the word Carrera was taken from the famous road raceĀ in Mexico; The Carrera Panamericana. In fact it was built with racing in mind.

1974 Porsche 911 Turbo

The first production turbocharged 911 was launched at the Paris Motor Show in 1974. In the USA it was to be known as the Porsche 930. In 1986 Porsche introduced the Porsche 911 Turbo Targa a hugely popular and exciting looking car and much sought after to this day.
